Spring break came up quickly, and we had big plans as a group. A good portion of the international students were planning on taking a trip along the Garden Route to Cape Town. I was in a car with four other people. We utilized backpackers and Airbnbs along the way. We stopped at Tsitsikamma, Mossel Bay, Hermanus, Plettenberg Bay, Agulhas, and Knysna. On these stops, we did Africanyoning (which involved cliff jumping, swimming, scaling down waterfalls, exploring caves, and hiking), we visited Monkeyland, went whale watching, explored many beaches, went hiking on Elephant trail, visited the most southern tip of Africa, visited an Ostrich Farm, and then finally arrived in Cape Town. This was the first time that I ever took a road trip, and I loved it. My favorite part was how whenever we wanted to stop to take a picture of the scenery, we would pull over and take in whatever view was present. Whether it was rolling hills, mountains, a field of flowers, a cliff overlooking an ocean, or elephants randomly in a field, driving itself became part of the attraction because there was so much to see. South Africa is truly diverse in its people, culture, landscape, and language. One of my favorite stops was when we were driving at night, and there were no lights for as far as the eye could see. I am a huge fan of the night sky and the stars, so we pulled over. It was amazing. The night was very clear and we could even see the Milky Way. It was an adventure. We tried out new restaurants and small shops and cafes, or we grabbed food at grocery stores and made a picnic somewhere along the way.
After days of sitting in the car, we arrived in Cape Town, just in time for the start of September.
